Tammy Duckworth is running against sitting Senator Mark Kirk (R) in Illinois. She is now in her second term in the US House of Representatives for Illinois’ 8th District. Prior to that, she was Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs, a position President Obama nominated her for in 2009, and before that headed the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. Duckworth was awarded a Purple Heart after she lost both her legs and partial use of her right arm when the Blackhawk helicopter she was piloting in Iraq was shot down in 2004.
- On the Issues: Rep. Duckworth is strong on climate issues, often highlighting them from a national security perspective. She also supports public financing of elections. She is a strong critic of waste in the military budget, and supports increasing spending for other important federal programs.
- Election update (9/27): Election forecasters consider this seat the most likely to switch from Republican to Democrat. Duckworth has consistently led Kirk, who has voted far too conservatively for a state that is safely a blue state in Presidential election years. She holds a significant lead in cash on hand, especially impressive because Kirk is an incumbent. Outside GOP groups are staying out, a sign that they believe they have already lost the seat.
